This species of cold-water coral is widely distributed, occuring in many of the world's oceans along the continental shelf break between 39 - 400 metres depth. It is found as shallow as 40 m in fjords and at depths of over 3000 m in the open ocean. Lophelia requires several key hydrodynamic and environmental conditions including; fast moving currents which provide the polyps with plentiful supplies of food, a hard substrate for settlement and a stable temperature regime.
