Deep-Sea Fisheries overview
Developments in fishing gear and electronics during the last few decades have allowed fishing to occur in places that were previously too deep or with bottom topography too rough to trawl. GPS, sonar and echo locators that improve visualization of the sea floor and catch, now allow fishermen to tow closer to bottom irregularities, such as Lophelia pertusa reefs, that previously they would have avoided due to the risk of damage to trawls. Bottom trawls can also be towed over rougher terrain because of the advancement of Roller and Rock hopper gear.
