Fixed gear (all dragged over the bottom for short distances):

  • Traps or Pots.
  • Sink gillnets.
  • Bottom longlines.

Fixed gears are left stationary on the bottom and so affect smaller areas than mobile seabed trawls. Fishermen try to avoid snagging and damaging their gear on corals. Occasionally however, they can entangle and uproot deepwater corals when the gear is set and retrieved as it drags along the seabed.
